Lu Xun is widely seen as the founder of modern Chinese literature.
他原本赴日学医,希望治病救人。
He had originally gone to Japan to study medicine.
但他后来认为,更致命的病,是中国人的精神。
But he later believed: a more terminal illness was the spirit of the Chinese.
于是他弃医从文,以笔为刀,剖开国人的麻木。
So he abandoned medicine to take up writing — using the pen as a scalpel.
《狂人日记》、《阿Q正传》是他的代表作品。
"A Madman's Diary" and "The True Story of Ah Q" are his representative works.
他看到礼教中"吃人"的本质。
He saw "man eating man" within the Confucian classics.
他的文字犀利,心中却怀有无限的温情。
His writing was sharp, but his heart held boundless tenderness.
他曾经说:"世上本没有路,走的人多了,也便成了路。"
He once said: "There was originally no road, but as walkers came, a road formed."

He said later that in that instant he decided to stop studying medicine.
身体再好也没有用,如果精神是麻木的。
However sound the body, it is no use if the spirit is numb.
《狂人日记》是中国第一篇白话小说。
A Madman's Diary was the first story in vernacular Chinese.
那个"狂人"翻开历史书,满本都写着"仁义道德"。
The madman opens the history books and every page is written with "benevolence and virtue".
可是他仔细看,字缝里却全是"吃人"两个字。
But looking closely, between the lines it is nothing but the words "eat people".
鲁迅一生都在骂,却也一生都在帮年轻人。
Lu Xun spent his life railing, and spent it just as much helping the young.
他常常自己掏钱,给学生印书。
He often paid out of his own pocket to have students' books printed.
他去世的时候,棺材上盖着三个字:民族魂。
When he died, three characters were laid over his coffin: Soul of the Nation.
