公元一零八零年,苏轼被贬到黄州。
In 1080, Su Shi was demoted to Huangzhou.
他人生陷入低谷,被诬陷诽谤朝廷。
He had hit a low point in life — falsely accused of slandering the court.
在黄州,他缺衣少食,亲自耕种一块坡地。
In Huangzhou, lacking food and clothing, he started farming a piece of slope land himself.
他把那块地取名"东坡",自号"东坡居士"。
He named that piece of land "Eastern Slope," and from it took the literary name Dongpo Jushi.
正是这段时间,他写出了他最伟大的作品。
It was during this period that he wrote his greatest works.
《赤壁怀古》就是在这时完成的。
"Reflections at Red Cliff" was completed at exactly this moment.
他不再哀叹命运的不公,反而学会了对命运微笑。
He no longer lamented misfortune — he learned to smile at fate.
黄州毁掉了政治家苏轼,却成就了文学家东坡。
Huangzhou ruined the politician but completed the writer.
到黄州的第二年,他在城东开了五十亩荒地。
In his second year at Huangzhou he opened up fifty mu of waste ground east of the town.
他写信给朋友说,自己现在是个农夫了。
He wrote to a friend saying that he was now a farmer.
他还发明了一道菜,用小火慢慢炖猪肉。
He also invented a dish — pork stewed slowly over a low flame.
那道菜后来就叫东坡肉,一直传到今天。
That dish came to be called Dongpo pork, and has lasted to this day.
一个被贬的官员,教会了中国人怎么吃肉。
A demoted official taught the Chinese how to cook pork.
他在黄州写的《寒食帖》,被称为天下第三行书。
The Cold Food Observance he wrote at Huangzhou is called the third finest running script under heaven.
那幅字里,能看出他写的时候心情起伏。
In that piece of calligraphy you can see his mood rise and fall as he wrote.
有一次他和朋友夜游赤壁,忽然想通了。
Once he went boating by night at Red Cliff with friends, and something came clear to him.
他说,江上的清风和山间的明月,是取之不尽的。
He said the clear wind on the river and the bright moon in the hills are inexhaustible.
那是造物者留给所有人的,不用花一分钱。
They are what the Maker left for everyone, and cost not a single coin.
