Lu Xun is widely seen as the founder of modern Chinese literature.

他tā原本yuánběn赴fù日Rì学xué医,yī希望xīwàng治病zhìbìng救人。jiùrén

He had originally gone to Japan to study medicine.

但dàn他tā后来hòulái认为,rènwéi更gèng致命zhìmìng的de病,bìng是shì中国人Zhōngguó rén的de精神。jīngshén

But he later believed: a more terminal illness was the spirit of the Chinese.

于是yúshì他tā弃医qìyī从文,cóng wén以yǐ笔bǐ为wéi刀,dāo剖开pōukāi国人guórén的de麻木。mámù

So he abandoned medicine to take up writing — using the pen as a scalpel.

《狂人日记》、Kuáng Rén Rìjì《阿Q正传》Ā Q Zhèngzhuàn是shì他tā的de代表dàibiǎo作品。zuòpǐn

"A Madman's Diary" and "The True Story of Ah Q" are his representative works.

He saw "man eating man" within the Confucian classics.

In it a Chinese man was about to be beheaded, ringed by a crowd of Chinese watching the spectacle.

The faces of those onlookers were numb and curious.

他tā后来hòulái说,shuō那一刻nà yí kè他tā决定juédìng不再bú zài学医。xué yī

He said later that in that instant he decided to stop studying medicine.

身体shēntǐ再好zài hǎo也yě没有用,méiyǒu yòng如果rúguǒ精神jīngshén是shì麻木mámù的。de

However sound the body, it is no use if the spirit is numb.

A Madman's Diary was the first story in vernacular Chinese.

那个nà ge"狂人"kuángrén翻开fān kāi历史书,lìshǐ shū满本mǎn běn都dōu写xiě着zhe"仁义道德"。rényì dàodé

The madman opens the history books and every page is written with "benevolence and virtue".

可是kěshì他tā仔细zǐxì看,kàn字缝里zì fèng lǐ却què全是quán shì"吃人"chī rén两个字。liǎng ge zì

But looking closely, between the lines it is nothing but the words "eat people".

鲁迅Lǔ Xùn一生yìshēng都在dōu zài骂,mà却què也yě一生yìshēng都在dōu zài帮bāng年轻人。niánqīng rén

Lu Xun spent his life railing, and spent it just as much helping the young.

他tā常常chángcháng自己zìjǐ掏钱,tāo qián给gěi学生xuéshēng印书。yìn shū

He often paid out of his own pocket to have students' books printed.

他tā去世qùshì的时候,de shíhou棺材上guāncai shàng盖gài着zhe三个字:sān ge zì民族魂。mínzú hún

When he died, three characters were laid over his coffin: Soul of the Nation.
