Three ways to write a number in Chinese

Chinese writes numbers differently depending on context, and this trips up learners:

  • Standard — everyday counting: 1234一千二百三十四
  • Financial (大写) — anti-fraud characters on money documents: 1234壹仟贰佰叁拾肆
  • Digit by digit — for years, phone numbers, room numbers: 2026二〇二六

The rules that catch people out

  • 十, not 一十, at the start: 15 is 十五, not 一十五.
  • Zeros become 零: 101一百零一, 1001一千零一.
  • 万 and 亿 group by four digits: 1,234,567一百二十三万四千五百六十七 (not by thousands like English).

This converter handles all of it automatically, so you can check any number you're unsure about.

Numbers are one small piece. To actually read Chinese, you need to meet words in context. Pinyora gives you free graded stories where every word is tappable for pinyin, meaning, and audio.

Frequently asked questions

Does it do 两 or 二? It uses the standard written form 二 (e.g. 二千). Spoken Chinese often uses 两 (两千) before measure words.

How large a number can it handle? Up to 16 digits, spanning 万, 亿, and 兆.

What's the 大写 form for? Financial characters (壹贰叁…) are used on cheques, receipts, and contracts because they're hard to alter.
