The keju was an ancient Chinese system for selecting officials.
It began in the Sui dynasty and continued for over 1300 years.
Through several rounds, candidates were tested on classics, poetry, and administrative judgment.
In theory, even a poor scholar could change his fate through study.
But in practice, the cost of preparing for the exam was enormous.
Many people studied the classics for an entire lifetime without ever passing.
The keju shaped the Chinese imagination of "learning leads to officialdom."
Even today, the modern college entrance exam is still seen as its echo.
The examinations came in several grades, from the county all the way to the capital.
The lowest grade was the child examination, and those who passed were called xiucai.
Above that came the provincial and metropolitan exams, then the palace exam the emperor presided over himself.
First place in the palace exam was the zhuangyuan, the dream of every scholar under heaven.
The examination hall was a row of tiny cells, each about the size of one desk.
Candidates stayed inside for several days and nights, eating and sleeping there.
To prevent cheating, candidates were searched before entering.
Some wrote crib notes into the lining of their clothes, even onto the shaft of a brush.
Others sat the exam their whole lives, still sitting it when their hair had turned white.
Fan Jin, in The Scholars, went mad with joy when he finally passed.
