HSK 4 Guide: Build the Bridge to Real Chinese

A free HSK 4 Chinese study guide with vocabulary themes, grammar patterns, reading practice, and a plan for moving from textbook Chinese into real content.

HSK 4 is the level where Chinese starts to feel useful and frustrating at the same time. You know enough to follow familiar topics, but real articles, podcasts, and social posts still contain many words that never appeared in beginner lessons.

That gap is normal. HSK 4 is not a finish line. It is the bridge from controlled study material into supported reading and listening.

What HSK 4 actually means

If you are around HSK 4, you should be able to:

  • follow longer conversations about familiar topics
  • read simple articles, announcements, and personal essays with support
  • explain opinions, reasons, plans, and experiences
  • recognize more abstract vocabulary around work, society, study, and travel
  • tolerate unknown words without stopping every sentence

The biggest shift is stamina. HSK 4 learners need paragraphs, not isolated example sentences.

Core HSK 4 vocabulary themes

Theme Examples What to practice
Work and study 经验, 任务, 研究, 解决 Explaining problems and progress
Society 环境, 文化, 经济, 发展 Reading broader topics
Opinion 认为, 觉得, 同意, 反对 Making arguments
Change 提高, 改变, 影响, 发生 Tracking causes and results
Emotion 紧张, 失望, 激动, 后悔 Understanding reactions
Travel and life 交通, 地址, 计划, 选择 Practical longer texts
Frequency and degree 经常, 偶尔, 特别, 相当 Nuance beyond 很

HSK 4 vocabulary is still common, but it appears in denser sentences with fewer obvious clues.

Grammar patterns to know

1. 把 sentences

Use when the object is affected by an action:

请把这本书放在桌子上。
Please put this book on the table.

2. Passive meaning with 被

marks something that happens to the subject:

我的手机被他拿走了。
My phone was taken by him.

3. More complex complements

HSK 4 adds useful result and direction patterns:

我听懂了老师的问题。
I understood the teacher's question.

他把门关上了。
He closed the door.

4. Although and however

Use 虽然...但是... for contrast:

虽然这篇文章很长,但是内容不难。
Although this article is long, the content is not difficult.

Mini reading practice

最近我发现,学习中文最难的地方不是记住新词,而是在真实文章里认出这些词。课本里的句子很清楚,可是新闻、评论和故事常常有很多我没见过的表达。现在我每天读一小段中文,把重要的词存下来,然后第二天再读一遍。虽然进步不快,但是我能感觉到自己越来越不怕长句子了。

Meaning:

Recently I discovered that the hardest part of learning Chinese is not remembering new words, but recognizing them in real articles. Textbook sentences are very clear, but news, comments, and stories often have many expressions I have not seen before. Now I read a short piece of Chinese every day, save important words, and read it again the next day. Although progress is not fast, I can feel that I am becoming less afraid of long sentences.

This is the HSK 4 skill: staying with a paragraph even when parts are uncertain.

Common HSK 4 mistakes

Expecting native content to feel easy.
HSK 4 gives you a base, not automatic fluency. Native content still needs support and repetition.

Saving every unknown word.
At this level, save words that repeat, unlock the sentence, or match your goals.

Only preparing for the exam.
Exam practice helps recognition. Reading and listening build actual use.

A practical HSK 4 plan

  • Read 15-20 minutes most days.
  • Mix graded stories with short real-world texts.
  • Reread the same text after 24 hours.
  • Save high-value unknown words with sentence context.
  • Listen to the same passage after reading it.
  • Once a week, summarize one paragraph in simple Chinese.
