HSK 3 Guide: What to Know Before Intermediate Chinese
A free HSK 3 Chinese study guide covering the 600-word checkpoint, grammar patterns, reading practice, and how to bridge into real Chinese.
HSK 3 brings the six-level HSK track to about 600 words total. This is the level where many learners feel a strange split: textbook Chinese starts to make sense, but real Chinese still feels too fast, too dense, and full of unknown compounds.
That feeling is normal. HSK 3 is not fluency. It is the bridge from beginner survival to early independent reading.
What HSK 3 actually means
If you are around HSK 3, you should be able to:
- read short graded stories and simple personal essays
- talk about plans, experiences, hobbies, weather, travel, and work
- understand common connectors like 因为, 所以, 但是, 如果
- follow longer sentences when the topic is familiar
- guess some word meanings from context
HSK 3 is the point where reading volume starts to matter more than memorizing another isolated list.
Core HSK 3 vocabulary themes
| Theme | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Plans and time | 计划, 以后, 以前, 最近 | Longer timelines |
| Experience | 过, 已经, 还, 刚才 | What has happened |
| Feelings | 觉得, 希望, 担心, 高兴 | Personal reactions |
| Work and study | 办法, 会议, 练习, 作业 | School/work topics |
| Travel and life | 地铁, 护照, 旅行, 搬家 | Practical contexts |
| Connectors | 因为, 所以, 如果, 虽然 | Paragraph logic |
| Degree/result | 比较, 更, 最, 完, 好 | Nuance and completion |
HSK 3 vocabulary is still common, but the grammar around it becomes more important.
Grammar patterns to know
1. Because and result: 因为...所以...
Mandarin often states the reason first:
因为今天下雨,所以我不想出门。
Because it is raining today, I do not want to go out.
You can also use only one half when context is clear.
2. If sentences with 如果
如果你有时间,我们一起吃饭吧。
If you have time, let's eat together.
3. Experience with 过
Use 过 for having had an experience before:
我去过上海。
I have been to Shanghai.
你吃过这个菜吗?
Have you eaten this dish before?
4. Complements like 完 and 好
These show result:
我看完了这本书。
I finished reading this book.
作业写好了吗?
Is the homework finished and ready?
Mini reading practice
最近我开始每天读一点中文。以前我只看课本,所以看到真实的文章就觉得很难。现在我先读简单的故事,再把不认识的词存下来。虽然我还有很多词不懂,但是我发现自己读得越来越快。如果明天有时间,我想试着读一篇关于旅行的文章。
Meaning:
Recently I started reading a little Chinese every day. Before, I only read textbooks, so when I saw real articles I thought they were very hard. Now I first read simple stories, then save the words I do not know. Although there are still many words I do not understand, I notice that I am reading faster and faster. If I have time tomorrow, I want to try reading an article about travel.
This is HSK 3 in miniature: time contrast, cause and result, although/but, if, and a learning-related topic.
Common HSK 3 mistakes
Thinking HSK 3 should make native content easy.
It will not. HSK 3 gives you enough structure to begin reading real content with support.
Avoiding long sentences.
Long sentences are exactly what you need now. Start with graded content, but do not stay inside tiny textbook examples forever.
Reviewing too much and reading too little.
Flashcards help, but HSK 3 learners often need more exposure, not more deck management.
A simple HSK 3 practice plan
- Read 10-15 minutes daily.
- Keep pinyin visible on the first pass, then hide it on the second pass.
- Save words only when they appear important or repeated.
- Practice connectors by summarizing each paragraph in one sentence.
- Once a week, paste a short real-world text into Pinyora and see how much you can follow.
How to bridge from HSK 3 to real Chinese
The bridge is not "finish one more textbook." The bridge is repeated contact with Chinese that has context.
Use Pinyora like this:
- Read Beginner and Intermediate stories.
- Save words from sentences, not from lists.
- Use the HSK Progress tab to see which levels are becoming familiar.
- Paste short articles, posts, messages, or class readings.
- Let Pro tools help with outside text when you start bringing in your own material regularly.
Open Pinyora free and start bridging from HSK 3 into real reading.
