HSK 3.0 Explained: Nine Levels, and What Actually Changed
HSK 3.0 replaced the six-level HSK on 1 July 2026. What the nine levels mean, why levels 7-9 are one band, how many words each level needs, and which standard to study.
HSK 3.0 became the operative standard on 1 July 2026, replacing the six-level HSK that most textbooks still teach. The formal name is 《国际中文教育中文水平等级标准》 — the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education — and it reorganises the whole scale rather than extending it.
If you learned that HSK 1 is 150 words, that number is now wrong. HSK 3.0 level 1 asks for 500.
Three stages, nine levels
The new scale groups nine levels into three stages:

Levels 7, 8 and 9 are not separately defined. The standard publishes one combined vocabulary list of 5,636 words for the whole advanced band, and the exam for it — HSK 7–9 — is a single test that places you at one of the three levels by score. Any resource advertising a distinct "HSK 8 word list" is inventing a division the standard does not make.
The vocabulary, level by level
HSK 3.0 grades 11,092 words in total, against HSK 2.0's 5,000.

Compare that with the old scale, which ramped steeply at the top:

The early levels got much heavier and the top level got much lighter — HSK 2.0's level 6 alone added 2,500 words, where HSK 3.0's adds 1,140 and pushes the rest into the 7–9 band. The practical effect is that HSK 6 is no longer the ceiling it was: under the new scale it sits at the top of the intermediate stage, not the end of the scale.
Most words changed level
This is the part that catches people out. HSK 3.0 is not a renumbering of the same list — the words were regraded.
Of the 4,490 words graded by both standards, only 817 kept their level. The other 3,673 — 82% — moved. On top of that, 501 words from HSK 2.0 were dropped entirely, and 6,479 words are new.

The largest single movement is HSK 2.0's level 6 splitting: 1,318 of its words went up into the 7–9 band, while 344 came down to level 5.
So "I know HSK 4" does not translate cleanly between the two scales in either direction. The stage you are at is a better guide than the number.
Which standard should you study?
It depends on why you are asking.
Taking the exam. HSK 3.0 is the standard as of 1 July 2026. Check the test date and version with your test centre directly when you register — the transition has been staged, and the level 7–9 exam has been running separately since November 2022.
Working through a textbook. Almost every published course is still built on HSK 2.0's six levels, and there is nothing wrong with that. A textbook's job is a sensible teaching order, and the old list is still a sensible teaching order. Just don't read its level numbers as exam predictions any more.
Choosing what to read next. Neither number matters much. What matters is whether you can read a text with only a few unknown words per paragraph — which you can check directly rather than inferring from a level.

HSK 3.0 front-loads vocabulary, adds a real advanced tier, and regrades almost everything in between. If you are studying for an exam, use it. If you are reading to get better at reading, the level number was never the point — start with text you can almost read and work up from there.
