HSK 1 Guide: Vocabulary, Grammar, and What You Can Read

A free HSK 1 Chinese study guide with the core vocabulary themes, grammar patterns, mini reading practice, and a realistic study plan.

HSK 1 is the first checkpoint in Mandarin. It covers about 150 high-frequency words: greetings, numbers, family, time, food, location, and simple actions. It is small enough to finish quickly, but important enough that every later level depends on it.

The goal is not to sound fluent yet. The goal is to recognize simple Chinese sentences without translating every character one by one.

What HSK 1 actually means

If you are around HSK 1, you should be able to:

  • introduce yourself
  • ask and answer simple questions
  • understand basic time, date, and location phrases
  • read very short messages about daily life
  • recognize common sentence patterns like 我喜欢..., 你有...吗, and 他在哪儿

HSK 1 is mostly sentence survival. You are learning how Mandarin sentences are built.

Core HSK 1 vocabulary themes

Theme Examples What to practice
People 我, 你, 他, 她, 我们 Who is doing the action
Family 爸爸, 妈妈, 儿子, 女儿 Simple introductions
Numbers 一, 二, 三, 十, 个 Counting, age, dates
Time 今天, 明天, 现在, 点 When something happens
Places 家, 学校, 商店, 这儿 Where someone is
Actions 去, 来, 看, 听, 说, 吃, 喝 Basic daily movement
Questions 吗, 什么, 谁, 哪儿, 几 Asking for missing information

Do not treat the words as flashcard trivia. Read them inside complete sentences as soon as possible.

Grammar patterns to know

1. Subject + verb + object

Chinese often starts more simply than English:

我喝水。
I drink water.

他看书。
He reads a book.

2. Yes/no questions with 吗

Add to turn a statement into a question:

你是学生。
You are a student.

你是学生吗?
Are you a student?

3. Possession with 的

Use to show "my", "your", or "someone's":

我的书
my book

老师的名字
the teacher's name

4. Location with 在

tells you where someone or something is:

我在学校。
I am at school.

书在桌子上。
The book is on the table.

Mini reading practice

Try reading this slowly. Tap or look up every unknown word, but read the whole passage twice.

今天我去学校。我的老师很好。她说中文,也说英文。中午我吃米饭,喝水。下午我回家。我看书,也听中文。

Meaning:

Today I go to school. My teacher is very good. She speaks Chinese and also English. At noon I eat rice and drink water. In the afternoon I go home. I read and also listen to Chinese.

This is the shape of HSK 1 reading: short clauses, familiar actions, clear time words.

Common HSK 1 mistakes

Memorizing characters without sentences.
You may know 去 means "go", but you also need to feel patterns like 我去学校 and 你去哪儿.

Ignoring tones too long.
At HSK 1, tones feel optional because the sentences are easy. They are not optional. Start listening and repeating from day one.

Overusing English word order.
Chinese time words often come early: 我今天去学校, not a direct English order.

A simple 7-day HSK 1 plan

  • Day 1: Pronouns, numbers, 是, 有
  • Day 2: Family and people sentences
  • Day 3: Time words and dates
  • Day 4: Places and 在
  • Day 5: Food and basic actions
  • Day 6: Question words and 吗
  • Day 7: Read 3-5 short passages and save every word you miss twice

How to practice in Pinyora

Use Pinyora for HSK 1 as a reading habit:

  1. Open Pinyora and pick Newbie stories.
  2. Turn pinyin on for the first read.
  3. Tap unknown words and save the ones you miss repeatedly.
  4. Read the same story again with pinyin off.
  5. Review saved words in the Vocabulary and Quiz tabs.

Open Pinyora free and start with a Newbie story.
